Melania Trump said the “record speaks for itself” when asked her opinion of Vice President Kamala Harris becoming her husband’s rival in the race for the White House.
In her first interview in two years, the former first lady told Fox News: “The country is suffering, people are not able to buy usual necessities for their families,” adding “the economy is really not great—inflation is high.”
“We have wars going on around the world, soldiers are dying, they were dying under this administration because of weak leadership, the border is open and dangerous, a lot of fentanyl is coming over and killing our youth,” she added in the interview that aired Thursday.
In contrast, she told interviewer Ainsley Earhardt, her husband’s 2016-2020 administration achieved “peace through strength” and allowed people to prosper.
Asked: “How do you feel when people say they don’t like him? What do you wish they knew about him?” Melania described him as a family man, who wants to improve his country.
President Joe Biden dropped out of the race for the White House on July 21 and backed Harris, who became the Democratic nominee for president weeks later.
“American people need to decide what they really want. It’s all in American’s people’s hands,” she added. The 2024 presidential election takes place Tuesday, November 5.
Newsweek has contacted the Harris campaign via email for a response.
In her upcoming memoir, Melania, the former first lady reportedly discusses her reaction to the shooting of her husband during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, and a second apparent assassination attempt at his Florida golf course on September 15.
Asked about the Butler shooting, she told Earhardt, “I ran to the TV,” having paused live coverage. “But when I saw it, no one really knew [details] yet, because when you see him on the floor you don’t know what really happened.”
Her immediate first phone call to her husband went unanswered, she said, before she spoke to a Secret Service agent who told her her husband was traveling to hospital and would be okay.
She said she heard about the golf course incident while in New York, saying: “I saw it on the television, and as soon as I saw it … i called again, and he was okay,” praising Secret Service agents involved and calling both survivals miracles.
“I think something was watching over him,” she said, “it’s almost like the country really needs him.”
Melania Trump suggested such attacks were not unlikely, saying the “mainstream media branding him as a threat to democracy” had fueled a toxic atmosphere.
The former first lady has kept a relatively low profile during this election campaign so far, in comparison to her presence during his 2016 and 2020 campaigns.
She appeared at the Republican National Convention on July 18 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but did not give a speech, and wrote a letter asking for compassion for her husband after the July 13 assassination attempt.
She also questioned law enforcement’s performance that day, in a video posted to X, formerly Twitter, on September 10, calling the attack a “horrible, distressing experience.”
“The attempt to end my husband’s life was a horrible, distressing experience,” she said. “Now, the silence around it feels heavy. I can’t help but wonder why didn’t law enforcement officials arrest the shooter before the speech?”
